It followed me home....

I'm going to set the ambitious goal to keep this bike close to 300 lbs even if I have to go ahead and put an EarthX battery and exhaust...

Re: Post your Ugly Mug!

Not exactly the lightest dirtbike out there... Though Sallydog has ridden some hairy stuff on his old KLR. Are you already a dirt/offroad guy? Or is this KLR the "light weight" bike that you plan to learn to ride dirt on? The KLR is a fat pig but we're going to try to do the full Trans Am...

Re: 2016 Shenandoah 500 Oct 1/2 2016

Found this. Looks like fun. http://www.jimrandall.net/MAT2/mat2.htm I used the MAT tracks when stitching together the route we're taking. I checked in with the guys that created this track and they quickly admitted that there were problems with the track and that some of it wasn't possible/passable...

Re: 2016 Shenandoah 500 Oct 1/2 2016

GPS tracks from NC to Maine you say.... I know a guy or two that might be interested in getting a copy of that! :deal: Happy to share the route but probably better after we've ridden it. There's some speculative bits to the routing and a couple of different choices in a few spots. I started with a ...

Re: 2016 Shenandoah 500 Oct 1/2 2016

I knew I could count on you guys for some good advice. Sorry I haven't contributed more here but I do lurk a lot. I've been planning a trip from Western NC to Maine, TAT-like, and we leave for that trip in a few weeks. I've stitched together a route that we'll use but if anyone here has the GPS trac...

Re: 2016 Shenandoah 500 Oct 1/2 2016

Hey guys - it's been a while since I posted on here but was thinking I might try this even on my fat dirt bike and wanted to get some local knowledge about the difficulty of the ride. I've been riding my R1200GS like an enduro up in the trail system near State College and over in Marienville PA in t...

Re: Fat dirt bikes, long trips

I have a hard enough time taking off for a week to go riding. Its pretty much inconceivable to me, the idea of taking SIX MONTHS off to go hiking. People that ride the entire route take take 4 - 5 weeks to do that. I can't imagine being away from home and family and responsibilities that long. I th...

Re: Fat dirt bikes, long trips

Are you looking for long weeks rides also? I am going to March Moto Madness with a few local wackos on big bikes if you want to ride along. By the time I started looking at the GS Giants events and found the MMM, I'd already made plans to travel that don't get me back home until that weekend. I rea...

Re: Fat dirt bikes, long trips

Yeah, us ADV guys seem to be more gray beards than flat bellies and I'm really blessed to be healthy enough (and retired enough) to be able to do it. What's more amazing is that I know 3 other guys that do this with me every year and we're gone from 10 - 20 days on these trips. Last year we did the ...

Fat dirt bikes, long trips

My last post here was a bit over a year ago when I bought the KLR and started getting it ready for the TAT. Did the trip and have hundreds of photos and a few scars (or is it the other way around) to prove it: https://thejonaks.smugmug.com/Road-Hawgs-Epic-Adventures/TransAmTrail/i-SccdBJ9/3/L/IMG_54...
