Re: Fat dirt bikes, long trips
Yeah, us ADV guys seem to be more gray beards than flat bellies and I'm really blessed to be healthy enough (and retired enough) to be able to do it. What's more amazing is that I know 3 other guys that do this with me every year and we're gone from 10 - 20 days on these trips. Last year we did the ...

Fat dirt bikes, long trips
My last post here was a bit over a year ago when I bought the KLR and started getting it ready for the TAT. Did the trip and have hundreds of photos and a few scars (or is it the other way around) to prove it: https://thejonaks.smugmug.com/Road-Hawgs-Epic-Adventures/TransAmTrail/i-SccdBJ9/3/L/IMG_54...

TAT Water Crossings
I've just returned from riding the TransAm Trail from Northern Va down through Andrews/Tellico Plains and out to Moab. We were passing through Mississippi on the TAT during and in the aftermath of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Ben. It left the rivers and streams all swollen over their banks and we had a ...

Re: Overnight/camping ride suggestion
Hey guys! I'd like to pass along my appreciation for the suggestions about venturing off into the Peter's Mill / Tasker Gap area. I finally got out there this past weekend to test out my TAT assault vehicle which I had fully loaded with everything I'm taking on the TAT: http://thejonaks.smugmug.com/...

Re: Overnight/camping ride suggestion
The Peters Mill main trail would be doable. Get into some of the others and you might not enjoy the rocks so much, even on the Peters Mill side the trail on top of the ridge is pretty rocky. It would be a lot more challenging than I have heard the TAT to be. Thanks. I'd heard that Peters Mill was t...

Re: Overnight/camping ride suggestion
Since this is a shake out ride for my TAT bike prep, I'm going out fully loaded. What do you guys think about the Peters Mill/Tasker Gap trails for hauling around a loaded KLR? Are we talking about rutted up single tracks or dirt/gravel roads out there?

Overnight/camping ride suggestion
I jumped on this forum a few months ago when I started prepping a KLR for a summertime ride on the TAT. I'm foolishly starting to think that I might be close on my bike prep and load-out that I'll be hauling so I'm looking for a place I can do a test ride for a couple of days to include some overnig...

Re: Post your Ugly Mug!
Thanks Kyler, that's what I was hoping for! I take the 1000 out to Summit Point for Roger Lyle's track days and may try to get up to NJMP this year. That's another thing from my distant past that I'm trying again too. I figure if the dual sport riding doesn't put me on a first name basis with an or...

Re: Post your Ugly Mug!
that should do well on the TAT. Come to some of the dual-sport rides and try it out there. They have big bike routes and you will quickly learn what it takes to manage the gnarly sections of the TAT. and welcome! oh yea, where do you race? Thanks Kyler, that's what I was hoping for! I take the 1000...

Re: Post your Ugly Mug!
Not exactly the lightest dirtbike out there... Though Sallydog has ridden some hairy stuff on his old KLR. Are you already a dirt/offroad guy? Or is this KLR the "light weight" bike that you plan to learn to ride dirt on? The KLR is a fat pig but we're going to try to do the full Trans Am...
