Clake on "sale" (AUD vs USD)

Post by smdub »

I ordered a Clake Prolever a month ago for ~$735+ship (don't have it yet). That was a lower price than when I started looking at them a year or two ago as the AUD has been weaker against the USD. Well, the AUD got hammered over the last week!

https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from ... UD&view=1W

That brings the price of a Prolever down to $635 + ship as of right now. I was hoping to try it on the new 500 and if I liked it, buy another for the trials bike (and maybe for the 150 too.) I may just go ahead and pull the trigger on another now. FWIW, international shipping is ~$37 for one, $63 for two.

Not yet. They had to wait on a pistons from Magura and were delayed. They all shipped together on the 26th though and tracking shows they are currently still on a boat/plane somewhere.

Nice score! Just became interested in the dual control Clake Two, but that $770 price tag is pretty rough. Looked at the conversion of the AUD to USD chart and you nabbed it right at that short-lived valley in conversion rate. Well done!

I worked on bikes the whole day yesterday (see TTR125 thread). Got the Clake installed and bled on the 500. Had to reverse flush the lines as there is no way to get the slaves above the level of the master. Wasn't too hard once I watched the bleeding videos (there is a little bleed screw up at the master you have to check too.)

I've ridden it around just a little. The brake starts to engage w/ a tiny bit of overlap w/ the clutch disengagement. It came w/ a few alternate cams and I'll probably swap in one w/ more of a gap between the two for a while.

Some things I've noticed:
* It needs to move further left. The electrical street controls on the EXC are large and are pushing it too far right. Its very difficult to grab just the clutch side of the lever. I'll likely swap to some other narrower aftermarket switch controls. This shouldn't be a problem on the XCW or trials bike.
* Its fairly compact width wise. I can go back to using BRP or Cycra bar top clamp style hand guard mounts. This was impossible on the EXC and even difficult on the XCW with the LONG stiff house mount of the KTMs.
* This looses the rear brake light switch. That occurred to me as I was removing the rear setup (what is this electrical connector for? Oh crap...) Its a new bike but the MVA shutdown prevented me from getting it titled in time. I don't think new bikes have to get inspected. But if they do I'll have to reinstall the rear setup temporarily just to have a foot lever to pass inspection. A dual control unit wouldn't have this problem. I'll relocate the old rear hyd pressure switch to the master cylinder banjo or something.
* Since the mounting clamp mounts from the front vs the top, I've lost my mirror mount. Need to work up a solution.

Yes. I contacted Clake about this and they suggested the same. I didn't know they used a common bolt spacing. I have something on order already.

Sicass makes a 27mm wide switch unit (vs 44mm factory) with the KTM connectors that's plug and play, Have one of those coming from RockyMtn.

Have a couple ideas for the brake light switch but haven't done anything there yet. That one isn't critical IMO like the others.

I changed the clutch cams to provide more lift and assist. That cut down on the brake/clutch overlap a bit and reduced lever effort respectively. They include a couple spare cams in the box. It could almost use the next higher assist cam (which I don't have) - might make the clutch effortless. I've ridden it around the yard just a little bit now. Will definitely take some getting used to but it's working as advertised. I have second guessed my decision again to go with the ProLever instead of the Clake 2 (I also agonized over this when ordering but took their recommendation.) The 2 would be easier to learn as you still have a 'pure' clutch only lever to use normally. The ProLever will still actuate the brake a little even in the clutch only finger position if you really pull it hard all the way to the bar. I suspect that it's just going to be weird at first, like the first time you hop on a Rekluse equipped bike. Hope to get out and really ride it this weekend offroad to get a true feel for it.

Oh, and I removed some unnecessary parts :lol2:

@smdub (how do you tag people in this?)

"This looses the rear brake light switch."

This is a super simple fix -- get light switches that trigger from brake fluid pressure in a banjo bolt, either to replace the connection up at the lever, or on the rear caliper, or wherever is appropriate for your system.

I havehad fluid pressure brake lights on multiple bikes and have never had a problem.
