Probably for the same reason all the XR400s listed on Ebay and Cycle Trader are in California. I'll keep an eye out for one in my searches, but good luck finding one that's already legal.

Also, I think all KTM's can be classified as 2-strokes because they burn about a 25:1 mix of gas to oil.

I wouldn't mind a street legal KX500 or one of the big bore KTMs.
On one level I think it would be super cool to have a motarded one, but then I think about getting too hot into a corner and having no engine braking...
I still want a two stroke, but I'll use it for offroading.

Big bore Motards are a blast, my 950 keeps me smiling for the whole ride. a 2 stoke wouldn't work well if you had to "drone" on freeways and such for parts of the ride, but yeah, when in the twisties, I bet a 500 smoker would just be outrageous. Hell my 525 is a riot, so I can imagine how the 500 would be.

Service Honda is still building custom, BRAND NEW CR500's in more modern CR aluminum perimeter frames. They also do the KX 500's, same deal in the perimeter aluminum KX frame.

It's not, that is a 4 stroke, but it is badass!

Here's what the 550 smoker looks like. The real "terror" was the KTM 495 and that bike will pull your arms off. Still to this day, one of the most (if not the most) powerful 2 stroke ever made. Here's a great site with tons of info.

I've got a friend with a BRAND new XR650R who basically did all Al Bakers Mods and also tossed on a full XRs only exhaust system. He bought it NEW in the crate last year and has only put 60 miles on it! He has decided too many toys and not enough time to ride it. I think I might look at it this weekend.
God help me if I ride it. The XRL will be up for sale
