SJ Michigan 20-25 July 2019

Post by Skinny-J »

People asking for info in advance is odd to me as most of the normal crew likes to "play it by ear" (you know who you are..) But here are the details I have worked out so far :

Saturday 7/20 - Trailer to Evart MI. 680 miles. Plan on a very early start Sat morning as with fuel stops, stops for lunch and dinner and a stop to procure supplies, we are probably talking about 13 hours on the road and I would like to get to the campground before O-dark thirty as its first come first serve. Camping will be at Sun Rise Lake camp ground. Primitive camping - vault toilet, no showers.

Sunday 7/21 - ride Evart ORV in the morning - almost direct access from the CG. 24 mile loop trail. Back to CG, pack and trailer 35 miles to Long Lake CG (primitive camping). Ride Long Lake ORV in the afternoon - direct access from CG -23 miles of trail. Camp at Long Lake CG that night.

Monday 7/22 - wake, pack up, trailer 30 miles and ride Grand Traverse ORV. 63 miles of trails available, we will target ~ 50 miles of these. End of day trailer 70 miles to Chandler Hill CG. Full Campground with bathhouse, showers, etc. We will be at Chandler Hill CG for the next 3 nights. They cater to the ATV crowd so we should not get the stink eye from the other campers but I felt you guys would really need a shower by now. They also sell beer at the camp store so I think it will be all good.

Tuesday 7/23 - 4 mile dirt road ride from CG to Tomahawk B loop (43 miles of trail). If we want more at the end of the day we will throw in some of the A loop

Wednesday 7/24 - 4 mile dirt road ride from CG to Tomahawk C loop (40 miles of trail).

Thursday 7/25 - Trailer home 740 miles

There is a ton of ORV riding in MI but the trails I have picked are Motorcycle only so that's why the rolling tour. If anyone has further questions that these specifics don't answer, just let me know.

Also, I started a list of attendees back in the first post. LMK if you are committed so we can start looking at transportation options at some point.

Thanks for that

I'm still in. Do we need to buy any sort of pass to ride those trails? I think the Six Days of MI ride mentioned something about buying passes at their event.

"most of the normal crew likes to "play it by ear" (you know who you are..)"

I don't dispute that in general, but the normal crew trusts you implicitly and knows whatever you come up with will be EPIC and will be shared when you feel it's ready.

Thanks,

Patrick

So even if we are plated, we need to buy a $10 trail permit. However, in order to purchase a trail permit, you must also have an ORV License that costs $26.25; it's kinda weird how they do it. Regardless, I found the process kinda tedious as you have to create and account and all this BS. Therefore, knowing I had those in the group who like to "play it by ear" (again you know who you are), I went ahead and purchased 8 licenses and permits that will be given out and become part of the cost of the trip. You are in the first 8 on the "in" list so you already have everything you need.

So, off road only? Good for the Freeride? It does have a tag.

Edit....put me on the list.
