I picked up Avid's Pinnacle Studio HD. So far I really like it. I think it's pretty user friendly with lots of functions, but simple enough to learn pretty quickly.

Pinnacle studio 12. been happy with it. Learned on model 11 or 10 when i was like 14 so they aren't very difficult. My dad didn't want to fool with it so thats what the first born is good for i guess  it can be pretty fun once you get the hang of it though. Make hour long dvd's with titles and special effects, unfortunately they want you to buy the nice one.

I've used all the ones mentioned already. Add to the list Adobe Premiere and now I'm on a MAC using Final Cut.
I'd have to say that Pinnacle was the easiest and had plenty to keep me entertained. If you're looking to do something specific (ie. want specific plugins like twixtor), make sure you get something compatible.

Sony vegas platinum productions suite 11 can be had for $60 on amazon (free trial for at least a month when downloaded from sony site). I highly recommend it.

Windows live movie maker used to be good but is now trash.
