Good reminder on the radio deal. I do quite a few events where it would be handy to be able to get on the net. I know the test is offered in Winchester, I need to get on that.GREWUPIN_D11 wrote:Two areas of support that have been minimally crewed the past two years are 1) truck support for getting broken bikes back to camp, and 2) club members with amateur radio licenses who are either driving a truck or can ride with a truck driver to enable quicker response to problems.
Realize this is a bit specialized and not for everyone. But if you're so inclined, check out "http://www.arrl.org/getting-your-technician-license". As for equipment, an inexpensive Chinese 2-meter handytalky and mag-mount antenna could put you in the game for less than $100.

Re: 2015 Shenandoah 500 Dual Sport - Oct 3-4 2015
The 21st running of the Shenandoah 500 is getting closer! Registration will open up on Aug 17 and end on Sept 18th or when the event is full. We will have 2 separate routes. The traditional dual sport route and an ADV style route. Both routes will intersect at the traditional lunch stops and end at the campground. Check back here on the 17th for info on how to register.
Approximately 500 km (300 miles) total over both days of scenic back roads, dirt roads and trails. There will be a separate "big bike" Adventure style (not technical) route. This means you have 2 choices on the type of terrain and difficulty to ride. The Dual sport route (technical w/options) uses a roll chart for navigation and the ADV route uses GPS for navigation. Last year we had people ride the DS route on Saturday and the ADV route on Sunday. Its all up to you!
The goal of the Washington Area Trail Riders (WATR) is to promote the sport of off-road motorcycle riding while serving the communities we ride through via our charitable gifts and support. WATR helps fund youth programs, food banks, fire departments and EMS units in the Shenandoah Valley that you will be riding in this weekend. In addition, WATR directly supports forest service operations financially and with manpower to help maintain trails.
PLEASE NOTE: This event is PRE-REGISTRATION ONLY! First come, first served. No entries accepted after September 18, 2015.

The S500 is a great event. I've gone the past 5 years and always had an awesome time. I've ridden it on a KTM two stroke, a DR650, and not one but TWO different sidecars. One year driving w/ my kid in the hack, another year hanging off the side of a fire breathing CR500/WASP rig.
Just a sidenote for all those guys who are either noobs and/or the guys with the bigger dualsport/adventure bikes. This is a great event for you!

I'll be there again with my Dad. Always a good time, and not a difficult ride if you skip the options. We'll be skipping the options since it's not my Dad's thing, if anyone wants to join us.
Thanks,
