Re: Greenbrier Enduro - Sunday March 17th
Ah, yes, I'd forgotten that ethanol helps short term with water in fuel. I'm not sure it's mandatory though. Liberty gas stations sell ethanol-free gas (although which grade is ethanol-free varies by location). Maybe they have to sell at least some percentage with ethanol... None of them close to me has high octane without ethanol.Skinny-J wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 11:06 amUnfortunately yes, its mandatory, its called ethanol. Its alcohol. The alcohol found in gas-line antifreeze is usually methanol or isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol binds with the water that can end up in the tank and then mixes with the fuel so it can be burned during normal combustion. Ethanol does the same thing, but over time, it will separate from the gasoline and cause problems. That's why ethanol is problematic for long term storage, it actually atracks water into the fuel system and then leaves it behind.Marylander wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 9:24 amDo they still sell "dry gas"? I remember the water thing being a regular issue when I was a kid although that might have been mostly related to gas in the tractor/condensation but dad kept a can of dry gas in his truck too. Maybe gas stations are generally better about it now...

Yes, its mandatory:
In 2005, congress passed the Energy Policy Act of 2005. It was the first renewable fuel standards (RFS) mandate passed into United States law. In 2007, the Energy Independence and Security Act, the RFS expanded and now requires automotive gasoline to blend 36 billion gallons of RFS (ethanol) by 2022. Now and in the future unless the law changes all gas stations carry E10 gasoline (gasoline that has up to 10 percent ethanol) and in some states stations now sell gasoline known as E15 or E85 that has up to 15 percent ethanol). Each year, the laws require that the number of gallons of blended gasoline increase. As a result, pipelines are sending refineries sub-octane gas that needs ethanol or premium gasoline blended with it before it goes on sale. As refineries start to cut this amount of pure gas, it is becoming scarcer and more expensive.
Bastards.

Get to know you local small airport. I buy 100LL for $5 a gallon. When I was buying non ethanol and boosting with Torco I was closer to $7 per gal.
Works great, I just stock up 20 gal at a time. Small price to pay for always having great running bikes and small power equipment. They are pretty fussy about what goes into those planes.

The Gore grocery, in Gore (on the way to The Cove) sells 87 and 93 ethanol free. A shout out to Jed for telling me about it!gots_a_sol wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 8:56 pmThe liberty in Winchester at 81 and 7 has ethanol free 93.
