I'm leaning towards fe501 or 701 or an range 500 or IDK 690? Something more dirt oriented but also suitable for long day trips, dual sport style.

500 (any brand) would be my recommendation. I used my 2020 KTM 500 for the KAT trip which was ~1000 miles in 5 days with a mix of pavement and trails. Geared stock, it will cruise comfortable @60mph and run up to almost 90 if needed. Feels good on back roads and the newer 20+ FEEL SO LITE! They steer and feel like my 300. Well planted and you can do true ST with ease on the 500's as well. Kinda the best of all worlds. The 690/700 bikes are good too, just heavier and no more capable than the 500's so choose your weapon!

Good luck on selling the BMW.

If there is much slab involved, my 701 is a much nicer bike than my 500. 6200mi oil change intervals are nice too. I could do the TAT w/o any scheduled maint. Its like a sexy DRZ w/ 2x the power, ABS, and a 6th gear :killingme:

It has nothing to do with the GS old man! He was talking about a 500 to 700 for Dual Sporting AFTER he sells the GS-
