New ULTRA Bee

Post by Bucho »

Sam and I had a short afternoon ride. He showed up with the brand new Surron Ultra Bee.

Pretty cool. I just took a very short ride on it. Better power and more snap than a reg Surron.

It really worked for Sam. He managed a whole bunch of stuff without needing any assistance.

That's great. I saw it in Sam's garage during his birthday party. Its definitely bigger and more substantial than the Light Bee. Sam had already installed the KKE 21/18 wheels on it. Can't wait to get one beside my KTM E and compare.

Mine is in country already and on the ground per tracking info. Sitting in a container in a port somewhere (LA?) waiting to be unloaded and shipped to me.

Where are you buying them from? Luna Cycle doesn't show them for sale and I don't readily see them available elsewhere online.

China. I think Sam ordered his from AliExpress or something. I bought mine from pegascooter.

There are at least 2 US distributors now. Can't remember who but its not Luna. The info is on the ADVRider UB thread. The US versions don't have the lights, signals, or passenger pegs but they do have a 120V charger. The international versions have that dual-sport stuff but have a 220V charger. Some of the Chinese sellers include a 120/240 transformer with the bike.

I'm not in a rush to buy right now. I don't even know if I'm sticking to dirt riding or not. I have to build a house and see how finances land before I decide to ride dirt again. The Adv bike isn't going anywhere, though.

They are multiplying...

Doesn't have the 'snap' of the modded LB or the KTM E. Still enough to loft the front wheel with just the throttle in S mode. I have to go download a manual (mine is all in chinese) and see what all the settings do. Will also be ordering a bigger rear sprocket for it asap.

Also need to run to HD and get a US 240V plug for the charger (to cut off the euro one and replace.) Will put the same twist lock on it as the KTM E charger so I can use all the adapters I already have. US ones have a 120V charger. Chinese ones have 220/240V. I think they were supposed to send an autotransformer with it but I'm setup to charge the KTM already off 240V everywhere so its only a minor inconvenience. Though I think I'll be able to adapt my aftermarket 120V charger from the Lightspeed 20S LightBee pack to it. It has a different charge plug (4-pin) so I'm sure we'll need to figure out the pinout.

Will have to get out the KTM and LBs out for a side by side size comparison and take pics.

Looks interesting.
Under real world riding conditions like say Michigan single track, how long do you feel a battery would last? And does that come legal to plate for road use?

Light Bee 2kWh
Ultra Bee 4kWh
KTM E 4kWh
Stark Varg 6.6kWh
The KTM makes 20-25mi hard use. I think real world results so far are ~25-30mi for the Ultra Bee (it weighs less and makes less power.) It takes ~30mi to go two laps at Eagle Bay. I'll let you know if we have to push it :lol2: If you go slow you can go farther on electric but who wants to do that? Did we ever go 25+mi in MI in one go w/o heading back to the vans? When I ride the KTM at Kairos every time we stop back at the van for a pit stop or lunch I just throw it on charge. It'll run the whole day there. I took the KTM to Hatfield in May. Rockhouse was too far for it. The hard trails are on opposite ends of the trail system with lots of fast double track to get there. I burned 20mi from one end to the other and wasn't comfortable taking the last hard trail (range anxiety is real.) My buddies popped back to the vans via the road at the end of the day and just came by and picked me up. I rode the 150 the next two days as we did longer stints in Bufflo/Devil Anse and the E wouldn't have made it past lunch. The Varg might be the only real hope to make a day of Hatfield w/o stopping.

The Ultra Bee has a VIN stamped on the headtube which is a huge step in the right direction as compared to the Light Bee. Though it gives errors on the NHTSA VIN decoder website. The 4-8 locations don't check out. Might be too new for the info to be in their database yet? Though it does pull up as a 2023 Surron so that is something.

The international versions don't come w/ a MSO but they come equipped w/ lights/blinkers/taillight/etc. The US versions are supposedly supplied w/ MSOs but don't have all the road legal kit on them. W/ a VIN I could prob get a SD or MT plate even w/o a MSO. There is nowhere around here within range to ride it to so I won't bother.

It does have a decent sized underseat storage area. Enough for the charger + a little bit of other kit. I won't ever carry the charger around but it'll be nice to throw tools/gatorade/first aid/etc down in there instead of having a little tank bag.
