2010 Shenandoah 500, Mt. Solon VA - 10/2 & 10/3
Re: 2010 Shenandoah 500, Mt. Solon VA - 10/2 & 10/3
As noted in the event flyer, additionally we check to make sure you have a USFS-approved SPARK ARRESTOR installed on your bike (this is NOT negotiable).
Ken, if you just repacked your can, you should be fine sound wise. We usually only pull out the sound meter if the bike is really stupid obnoxiously loud.

I can understand the air pressure recommendation, especially for those who don't ride rocks on a regular basis and also for those who don't carry the means with which to fix flats trailside. Flats are a burden to sweep riders when the rider comes unprepared for them. Last year, while in line to show my registration/insurance/etc. someone started checking my tire pressures for me. When I told him that my tire pressures were fine, he ignored me and continued to check them. Is that really necessary? Call me whatever, but I really don't like someone else working on my bike for me. Am I out of line to feel that way?Firebolter wrote:All we check, is License and registration/tag that matches. We recommend air pressure of 15lbs. I look for any really noticeable issues, like no brakes present (yes some guys will ride with no rear caliper), large oil leaks stuff like that. You'll be fine! But a beer or two won't hurt!

The stamp is not as important as having the Spark Arrestor.Kyler wrote: and my ancient can does have a USFS stamp of approval on it
No Spark Arrestor, No Ride!
BTW, NVTR will be enforcing that ALL bikes are equipped with a Spark Arrestor (as we do every year) per our agreement with the Forest Service.

Just call me stupid - how am I supposed to tell the difference? The side of the silencer says USFS approved. I assume that means a spark arrestor. Not trying to buck the system - just not sure how to make sure I'm legal. Worst case the Wasp sets at the campground.brappp wrote:The stamp is not as important as having the Spark Arrestor.Kyler wrote: and my ancient can does have a USFS stamp of approval on it

usually they will stick a stick in the end of the pipe and if it doesnt go much more than a few inches your fine.
and they dont just recommend 15 psi they will PUT 15-20 psi in your tires, I never agreed with this and think it is dangerous as hell and truely liable to the person changing a rider's personal tire pressure, all to save fixing a few flats?

I was not at tech inspection when you came though last year. I could definitely see how frustrating that might be when you yourself know you are all good and you are almost ignored. I know if I took my 250 though tech and didn't say anything they might have been shaking their heads a little when they got to my rear tire (cuz I am running a bib mousse).OldmanX wrote:Last year, while in line to show my registration/insurance/etc. someone started checking my tire pressure for me. You would be simply amazed at what we see year after year at tech inspection. I remember one year there was this older guy who swore up and down his tire pressure was all good, no need to check, that he put in new tubes the night before, however it looked really low - as it turned out he had a tiny hole in the tube from where one of his spoons caught it. Would he have made it a few miles from the start? Probably. Would he have made it to lunch without crashing hard, going off the edge and/or destroying his rim, himself and/or other parts of his bike? No Way!
I wouldn't consider checking your tire pressure at tech inspection "someone else working on my bike for me". Like going to the doctor, a second opinion never hurts.

I'll check tonight - I don't recall what the end look like when I put it back together - too many beers at that pointHare wrote:usually they will stick a stick in the end of the pipe and if it doesnt go much more than a few inches your fine.

Every time I have worked tech inspection over the years we have used 15 psi. If the rider wants to run higher, that is all on them. The purpose is to catch the many that come though with 2-6 psi. You would be surprised.Hare wrote:they dont just recommend 15 psi they will PUT 15-20 psi in your tires
Take personal responsibility for your own bike. If you feel anything on your bike is questionable, change it until is is not or don't ride it!!
