606 's on my DRZ400
They worked for me for 5 years. Although I don't do hero sections.
I have a new set on now,ready for the run!

Here is what I can add but Bucho just about covered it:
We picked the dates based on the vacation WF bid and was awarded. I am not sure if he is working right up thru the 18th (he probably won't know until he has his June schedule); BUT at this point I have a camping trip planned with the family that I don't get back from until late on the 18th.
Therefore the intinerary I have as of now looks like this:
Monday 6/19 - Trailer to Matewan, WV (Matewan offers lodging at the Hatfield Resort Inn, food at Wingo's grill and a big parking lot out back where we can hopefully leave our vehicles. I will confirm this with the owners when we get a little closer)
Tuesday 6/20 - Ride day 1-Matewan to Slade
Wednesday 6/21 - Slade to London
Thursday 6/22 - London to Jellico
Friday 6/23 - Jellico to Harlan
Saturday 6/24 - Harlan to Matewan (staying at the Hatfield Inn again)
Sunday 6/25 - Trailer Home.
The western side is said to be the "harder" side so that is basically the Slade to Jellico portion. So that might be good to know if your if your Dad only wanted to join in for a couple of days.

I assume the Slade to Jellico portion is for big bikes. Then I'll be ok.
No hero sections for me. I have rode single track and adventure rides. Some mud and deep sand.

Well, you know how I ride. Or try to ride. Or whatever that thing is called that I do when I sit on a motorcycle and attempt to make it do things.
I wanna do the crazy stuff! I'll follow Skinny-J anywhere. I was more asking for my Dad so he can decide if he wants to go, if there would already be a crowd that was doing less crazy stuff or if he should skip it instead. He's been riding a lot lately and if this was going to be like the PA tour last year I think he could do it fine. But if we're going into the wilds of Kentucky, then I'll just let him know we'll do another trip later in the year.
What bikes are people taking?

For those who might need this for jetting purposes. The altitude range of the towns we will pass is 700-2500ft. It's likely we will be riding in 80-95 degree weather with high humidity.

As a dualsport tire, I've always been pretty happy w/ the D606 on the rear. But it IS a dualsport tire.
When its super sloppy, really nothing works great. A brand new fresh knobby w/ sharp edges will work, but as soon as that sharp edge gets the tiniest bit rounded... Probably why professional racers put new tires on for every race. But most of us will run the same tire for a year (or two).
The Kenda trackmaster Pat mentions is probably a better offroad tire, but I felt it would wear quicker on the pavement.

For your (whomever) viewing pleasure. Here is a side by side comparison of the 606's currently on the bike and the Kendas on the spare set of wheels:

The Kendas have about 1500 miles on them, the 606s I have put about 1000-1200 miles on. They where used when I got them but looked close to new.

I used trackmaster ii for the trip last year, and as expected they were squared off by the end. Didn't stop me from putting more commuting miles after that, but they were done for dirt.

For what it is worth, I've put a couple thousand miles on d606s. They are smooth and consistent on asphalt. Gotta run close to 30 psi to keep them from wearing as quickly on asphalt especially the front. I recon that is the same for any nobbie on asphalt. Most importantly with rim locks, gotta run 3 to 4 Oz of weight opposite the rim of rim lock. I used trial and error with using weights that screw lock onto the spokes. Massive difference!
For me...I got to say I'm more concerned riding a dirt bike any more than 100 miles in a day. Anyone try it? It's tiring big time. I'd imagine riding with a group may be less tiring but at the end of the KAT, I wonder if I'll hate my wonderful new dirt bike.
I know I'm likely in for this trip but in may I will need to ride to Tasker's, ride around all day then ride home b4 I commit to 5 days consecutive of a similar.
