I just picked up an '06 KTM250XC. Previous owner said it has 8 hours on the top end, new clutch plates, recently rebuilt front forks, with receipts. Runs and shifts fine. I paid $2500. It came with about $250 worth of filters, plugs, parts, dirt bike stand, set of spool stands for street bikes..etc... Also has, excellent condition Tusk wheels, FMF Fatty Pipe, FMF Shorty, Fastway foot pegs.

Everything seems to work fine, except the front brake is mush. I have to dial it in to suit me...That is the problem, I haven't ridden a 2 Stroke in 20+ yrs, and have been riding my DR650 as a dirt bike. I know older KTM's aren't counter balanced and I expected more vibration than normal. I know the XC is more high strung than the XCW and more of a Hare scramble set up rather than a woods bike. But, I should be able to make it work for single track?

Any thoughts, advise? Where is the best place to buy old KTM parts? Basically I am clueless on Euro brands.

If I remember correctly these years the xc and exc were not that different in tune but had different gear ratios.

Be careful tightening the bolts to the magnesium cases.

Double check your air filter when you clean them. They are easy to misalign.

Rocky Mountain MC online should have most of what you need and they have a good stock of OEM parts too.

The XC's are a closer ratio but they work fine in the trees. The only downside IMO (I had a 200XC) is when you are out in the open and you want to run WFO etc. the bike will be screaming at about 50ish MPH in 6th gear. If you are going to use it as a dirtbike, it will be great, XC's as Dual Sports, not so much.

Suspension. set sag. set clickers to midddle and test. adjust as needed. Maybe fww for slower technical stuff?
Can you adjust the "hit" with the springs on that model? Soften the hit a little.

I mainly got it because it was cheap and was as close to meeting my requirements for a lightweight woods bike, without spending $9k+. The DR is my dual sport, period, I love that thing...lol. The negatives on the older XC's are 5 gears and no e-start. I don't plan on using it anywhere that only 5 gears will matter. The biggest drawback for me is the kick start. I don't mind the extra work out, but kick starting can be dangerous in certain situations. I was looking at flywheel weights to help reduce stalling. Rekluse would be the fix, but that's half what i paid for the bike. However, if the bike works out, why not.

Luckily, the guy I got it from was only 5lbs lighter than me. He recently had the suspension done at Ellicott City Motorsports with receipts to prove. I need to do the sag, clickers and testing. What is "fww?'

Yes, I can adjust the power valve. I haven't had time to go through all the parts he gave me or open it up to see which spring is installed. Riding it around the yard in 1st and 2nd gear, it does seem to hit quickly. But nothing that seemed uncontrollable.
