OBX Beach/Dune Riding

Post by Bucho »

Ive been at the Outer Banks this week in Corolla.
I brought a pair of dualsport bikes along. Several mornings Ive gotten up real early (for me) and ridden out on the northern most part of the beach.

One morning I went out solo, another morning I managed to take my sister 2up to go look for wild horses and the last two mornings I had someone come along on the other bike.

The weekend before this trip, I found a decent deal on a 2020 TW200. It was a great bike to bring on this trip. The fatty tires aired down did well on the beach. The low seat height made it possible for noobs to ride in the sand.
My older brother and his son each came out w/ me one day riding the TW. Even with very minimal offroad experience they were able to manage.

My brother in full beach riding gear.

A few spots were tricky with a passenger, but the TW made it possible to go slow in the sand.

My sister is a crazy horse person and loved this.

My nephew did really well. He has only started riding a year or so ago on his first bike (HD sportster). This opened his eyes to a different world of riding.

The WR250R is still my bike and a better all around bike.

But the TW was fun in its element.

This looks awesome. What sort of permit do you need and what are the riding limitations?

That looks like a blast!

FWIW, KTM makes an ultra fine fine 'mesh' like air filter cover for riding in the sand. It keeps the ultra fine stuff from sticking to and clogging up, or worse, making it through the filter. It prob fits other bikes w/ similar shaped air filters. Can prob find similar products in other shapes too.

No permit needed.
North of Corolla just keep following the paved road, it dumps out on the beach. This section of beach that runs maybe 10 miles to the VA border is considered a "road". So street legal vehicles are allowed. The signs say 4WD only, but street legal motorcycles are okay.

I ran about 6 PSI on the bikes.

Get out on the beach by 0615-0630 and other people on the beach will be minimal. I think the speed limit for the beach is maybe 15-20mph (I honestly don't know). I go slow near people. I let it rip a few times when I was the only person for a few miles. There are county sheriffs on patrol out there. Riding foolishly will cause problems. Not really a place to go play sand racer.
There are roads and houses back behind the dunes. They are roads, you can drive on them and explore. But its sort of people's neighborhood. Just slow poking around riding back there.

No feeding wild horses and keep 50' distance. But from my pics sometimes if you stop and shut your bike off, they might wander a bit closer to you.

Its fun as a little motorcycle thing to do while on vacation with your family. But certainly NOT a destination just to go ride your bike.
