Chris-the truth is, we can't be 100% sure. None of us saw the accident. What we do know is it was a head on with the other bike as they rounded the same corner in opposite directions. The impact happened at the center line. Anything else I could say would be speculation.

That's awful. How's the KLR rider?

Broken finger. Otherwise, unhurt.

It's pretty amazing that the guy got off so light. I do think he hit his head quite a bit harder than he realized -- he was pretty loopy. Either that, or he was a bizarre freak to start with.
I suspect that Dom won't remember much of the last couple days, so we'll probably not ever know. It's not exactly important, in the bigger picture. What's important is that Dom have a full recovery.

Dom was airlifted from Monterey to UVA following the head on, I visited him in the orthopedic unit yesterday. His right femur is shattered with a titanium rod running from the hip to knee. His right ulna and radius are also shattered with various titanium plates, rods and screws used to reconstruct the arm. His arm is supported vertically, he doesn't have feeling nor movement of the fingers at this juncture. Contact with the KLR's left fork tube probably played a significant role in Dom's injuries.
UVA doesn't allow long distance calls. He was grateful to get his wallet and cell from the Highland County Sheriff's Dept. yesterday.
He's in generally good spirits and expects to remain at UVA for another 2 weeks followed by a few months of therapy near his home. His direct line is 434-982-1368.
Cards can be sent to:
UVA Medical Center
1215 Lee Street
Charlottsville, VA 22908

Thanks for posting that, Lou.
I expect that Dom's cell phone battery is about run down -- maybe an appropriate cell-phone charger would be a nice care package.

Finally got home & my hand on a working computer.
First of all, thanks to all involved!!
You guys rescued my bike and what's left of my gear. Nothing like getting all your clothes cut off and laying naked along side the road. That was my favorite leather jacket too :( Thanks to Lou for making such a long trip to deliver my wallet & cell phone. Al, thanks for the card. Missed it at Charlottsville, but it was here yesterday when I got home from the rehabilitation hospital near Pittsburgh. Thanks again to Mike for storing the ktm until we can get to it. Thanks to anything else I missed.
Stayed at UV Medical center one week and the rehab hospital another. They sent me home now until weight can be applied to the right leg(approx six more weeks). Looks like no riding until Sept or Oct if everything heals ok.
Thanks again to everyone,
Dom

Welcome back Dom! Should we send a get-well strip-o-gram?

then we'd have to send a cardiac specialist.
