I'm not worried about needing the route for the actual day of the ride, but it would be nice to be able to view it beforehand. Who knows, I might have a suggestion or two to make if I could actually view the route.
No disrespect intended, but every time I've followed someone with GPS, it's always turned into a "cluster flop" of missed turns, back-tracking, dead-ends or "roads" that were more of a game trail...

following someone on with a gps on a group ride turning into a cluster f?
Half the people that showed up on last years ride have never met each other in person. By the time we came home, we were all great friends and felt like we had known each other for a life time. I don't think you'll get that with a firmly planned route and roll charts. Just my opinion.
Part of the 777 ride is to plan the route via maps, etc. and then go get lost in the woods in knee deep shyt concerned that you'll never make it out. It's called an adventure. Not to mention, there are more then enough people around to help out should you get stuck in the thick crap.
I pulled it off last year on a strom and didn't drop. we had a few drops in the mud and a few people too exhausted to upright their own bike, but someone was always there to help. Even when my strom bottomed out while cresting a bump, people were there to push me off. You won't come back with a story on the final ride if you do a pre-ride, you won't have the same unknowing adventure either. 
The roll chart idea is awesome, however, I foresee people using that as an advantage to run ahead as oppose to sticking with the group. It's more fun to watch each other struggle. Honestly, I hope we get the same downpours as last year and it's a muddy mess, just so we have more stories. So there will be none of this
And when the day comes to an end, it's good times, beer, fun and friends. 
Keep the 777 ride the way it is.. as an annual deal semi-planned, but chances are you'll end up in knee deep shyt that will test you, push you, and build friendships with a great bunch of guys that you may never of met previously.

The garmin software can print out the turn by turn directions which anyone can modify to fit whatever roll chart they want to use... I can post a copy of the directions for the route down is a few days... I also use http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ to convert charts as needed...
GPS or Roll Chart, nothing is a 100% effective... Notice the quote in my sig line.. just because it's on a map doesn't let you know the conditions of a road... Nothing is as good as everyone sticking together and working thru everything ... However, it's nice have options....
We'll figure it out on the 777 ride... The ride down is pretty well known - day 2 not so much - but we will see how it turns out..
