Just remember that cold air intrusion is the enemy!
Hippo hands or similar guards as already mentioned route the wind off your hands and when combined with heated grips makes a great combo and allows you to wear lighter gloves.
Balaclava's or neck gaiters - anything that keeps cold air off your neck and from blowing through your helmet makes a big difference.
Windproof outer layer if it's really cold. Goretex may be great for staying dry but the fact that it is breathable also means it is NOT windproof. If out riding and caught off guard by the temps I've been known to throw on my cheap light weight rain gear over what ever gear I happen to have on. A thin shell that's windproof with quickly demonstrate how important keeping the wind out of your clothing is.
Moisture wicking socks - if you are wearing enough gear to keep your feet warm at 70mph you need something to wick the sweat away from your feet.

Moving to Florida for the winter works good too...

Re: cold weather riding wear
FYI I just checked out the Hippo Hands site, and it looks like he's going with Kyler's plan to keep warm, get 'em while you can:
"We need to let our customers know that we have stopped production of Hippo Hands as of this date, and once our present stock runs out, we will no longer be in business. It has been a pleasure helping our fellow riders keep fingers warm, but at 68 years old, the time has come for me to retire and go riding down south in the winter, leaving snow and ice behind. Selling our stock will take several months, and obviously we will be running out of some models of Hippo Hands before others, which is something we can't avoid. If that happens with your order, we'll notify you and issue a full refund of your order immediately."

wow - he has also suffered from cheap knock-offs. I bought a set for my Canada trip and no i'm going to hoard them. I was going to sell them too.

Re: cold weather riding wear
I've got some of the cheap Hippo Hands knock offs. Got 'em at The Dirt Shop about 20 years ago. I haven't used them in years. Kind of sad to see the originals going away though.
When I first read this thread I assumed it was about street riding. If this is about trail riding then I pretty much dress the same in the middle of winter as I do in summer. I sweat so much even in the teens that I still soak the helmet liner in sweat (and in my Klim mondo vented lid). At the beginning of a ride I might wear some old mittens I got at REI but I have to swap them out for regular dirt gloves after getting warmed up. Big difference for me in winter as that I can't sit around very much, gotta keep riding, or else I will get cold.
