Am fine with doing miles, believe me. I do have a little concern with having a decent size group attempting it (regardless of peoples experience..we all know that larger groups add more time), but that's neither here nor there as there are always options to jump off route and make some time up on the pavement. However, I as to not deter anyone from coming...if there are those that feel they will be slower on the gravel, etc. and faster on the pavement that want to go speak up and we'll figure something out alternate wise. If there are enough people, breaking the group into two groups isn't unheard of.
Greg...are you in? Do you want to go is my basic question?
Anyone else? Speak up.
Mica...the route Jason sent to me goes from front royal, drops down the west side of skyline on backroads (not skyline drive itself) then basically catches a few more back roads eventually meandering to 33 near brandywine. You could probably hook up with the group up at front royal and be fine. We both have scala's so we can keep in kahoots that way before we get too far into wv. where cell signals are scarce.
Any size group is fine - we will find away to work it out, multiple groups - etc...
I subscribe to the rule that you are responsible for the person behind you... If you are in a group and the person/group makes a left, you look to see if their is a person behind you - if so - you go and they check for the person behind them - etc.. If there is supposed to be someone behind you - you wait till they show up... This way if something happens is should be pretty easy to let the leaders know something is amisss if bikes keeps dropping off.. The lead(er) group will on periodically stop and allow folks to get all caught up.. It's pretty easy to get into a rhythm this way, and everyone finds a spot they are good with... Some folks hate having to stop to wait for a slower rider/group, me personally I love it.. It means once I make contact with the guy behind me - I can take off to play catchup (within my own limits), thus sometime running swing like this means you get the best/fastest ride (as the leaders aren't going to be blasting so as to keep the group together.. I honestly don't care about the experience level of anyone on a ride as long as they ride within their limits, the group will keep moving - but an accident can ruin your whole day.... Per some of my earlier posts - there are alternative routes to take if anyone feels overwhelmed or some folks want to hit some side stuff while we wait for the rest of the group...
10AM coffee stop is fine with me.. as long as you old dudes don't need a bathroom stop at 10:30 and 11 - etc etc... It will be a delibrate pace - but there will be periodic stops.. I will have full gear with me - but depending upon the heat I might not put the pants later into WV .. We are talking mid/late aug - so I suspect it's going to be HOT... I will most likely arrange a stop every 80 or so miles. I know some bikes don't have THAT far a range but 80 should do it - and other will be able to get water coffee and cigs.
If it's easier to meet up in Front Royal.. IF memory serves - on 340/522 just south of the i66 exit (for FR and skyline) - there is a McDonalds and a Sheetz on the Right Hand Side (going N to S).. This will be the 9:30 stop for Gas/Food/Coffee/Smokes - etc... As once we get to fort valley/678 - there isn't awhole lot of places to stop (or ones that I can easily mark out)...
for the GPS handicapped... if you would like to see the routes - I recommend http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ - you can import the .gpx files from here and import them into a number of different formats - one of which is google maps (Internet based) or you can import them into Google Earth for more detailed information...

Was waiting for DCL to chime in..had mentioned it to him, that was 1 of the 4. I have a possible 3 (2 others on stroms and another on a ktm) others coming... one of which just registered here yesterday, so speak up John (we know you're lookin' , not sure if the other two are or not)!
Had hoped to change the rear tire before committing. Instead I changed the fork oil....maybe I'll get to the tire next week........maybe not....sliding a little can be fun.
