I watched about half of that and felt like I was hurting all over LOL...

My first time on a dirt bike since I was 19 was in 2013 in the West Maui Mountains and I remember asking at one point "Are we on a ride or a walk." Steep, dense woods with lots of roots, rocks, and trees on the ground to get over. I looked like this when I was done:

I kept asking our "guide" if we were going the right way.

Hawaii is basically clay under the surface dirt. Lots of roots and rocks. I learned how to ride in Kauai in the 21 years I lived there. I mean I knew how to ride, but the conditions in Hawaii are a combination of all of the worst things (when wet) you could ride on. Side hilling, roots, rock gardens, massive ups and downs across the valleys etc. A good 125 was the best weapon as if/when it rained, you wanted lite weight and useable power. Momentum is the key. Once you learn to ride a place like Hawaii, you can ride anywhere.

Each island is a little different. Kauai is the most slippery as it is the oldest and has the deepest levels of clay whereas the Big Island (youngest of the chain) is comprised of a dirt is a layer then you hit volcanic rock underneath, so traction is much different on the Big Island than Kauai. Maui and Oahu are more like Kauai.

When we would go to the Big Island for the Mauna Kea 200 enduro, it was a rock/trials event and would beat the snot out of you. But you would also ride through the rain forest, open dusty high-speed stuff and then woods. You start at sea level and race from the hotel up to the 12000 foot area at the top, your bike is impounded overnight and then you race down the mountain the second day back to sea level. We used to re-jet at lunch on both days cause we didn't have FI back in the 90's.

I loved riding there, challenging and the views are awesome. It was so cool to suit up, ride from my house and meet my buddies and take on the trails that covered the island back in the day. Early 2000's a lot of the cane company started leasing land and the coffee companies came in and we lost so much access to the trails, but there is still a crap load of quality stuff there.

For those of you that met my buddy Mark in Colorado or Idaho when he met us there, go out to Kauai and look him up and check it out, it truly is a bucket list riding experience. And if it rains, get ready to expend some energy as getting out of the valley's after a flash rain can be a real bugger!
Lots of cool bikes---
